Dr. John Wilkin is a Professor of Marine Sciences at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on the dynamics of marine ecosystems, satellite remote sensing, and data analysis and simulation of the coastal ocean and adjacent deep sea. His research work focuses on applied ocean observing and forecasting, merging high performance computer simulations with observations from satellites, underwater robotic vehicles, animal tags, and other novel platforms. The ocean forecast systems he develops, are applied to understanding how ocean dynamics affect marine ecosystems, and to deliver actionable guidance for marine operations and environmental health.

Dr. Wilkin co-authored the National Strategy for Coastal Ocean Modeling in response to the 2013 U.S. Presidential National Ocean Policy, advising NASA’s Physical Oceanography Data Center, and is past co-chair of the UNESCO Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) panel on ocean observations for physics and climate. He coordinates the NJ/PA regional “Shore Bowl” competition of the National Ocean Science Bowl for high school students, and participates in international schools training early career scientists on developments in observing and modeling the marine environment.
